Lettye Burgtorf

Lettye, a visionary educator, created Ohana Institute’s multi-sensory program and state-of-the-art school. She draws on her international upbringing to shape a thriving learning environment and continues to inspire innovative education approaches.

Executive Director

As Executive Director, Lettye Burgtorf continues to nurture Ohana’s vision of holistic, student-centered education. Growing up in Spain and Puerto Rico gave her a deep appreciation for diverse cultures and approaches to learning, which continue to inspire her work today. Guided by her belief that every child deserves a personalized path, Lettye is dedicated to creating an innovative and caring school community where all students can grow and thrive.

Ellie Spivey

Ellie brings 40 years of experience, including five at Ohana and 25 as a principal. Recognized as Florida’s Reading Leader of the Year, she is passionate about global education, supporting a school in Tanzania, and is inspired by the dedication of Ohana’s teachers.

Principal

Ellie brings 40 years of experience in education, including five years at Ohana and 25 years as principal of another school. She has been recognized as Florida’s Reading Leader of the Year and Bay District Principal of the Year and is passionate about global education, including supporting a school she and her husband, Bill, built in Tanzania. Originally from Andalusia, she earned her master’s in Educational Leadership from Florida State University and her undergraduate degree from the University of Alabama. Ellie often describes Ohana as her educational utopia, inspired by the dedication and passion of its teachers.

Doug Cantrell

With a background in management and sales, Doug brings a wealth of experience to Ohana. As Director of Operations, he ensures daily operations run smoothly, supports staff, and creates a safe, welcoming environment where students can focus on learning and reaching their full potential.

With a background in management and sales, Doug brings a wealth of knowledge to Ohana. As the Director of Operations, Doug keeps things running behind the scenes—coordinating daily operations, supporting staff, and ensuring everything functions seamlessly so students can thrive. Doug cares deeply about providing a safe, welcoming, and well-organized environment where students can focus on learning and reaching their full potential.

Elizabeth Vinson-Phan

Elizabeth brings 15 years of teaching experience across multiple subjects and a decade at Ohana. She focuses on supporting students, parents, and teachers while fostering an innovative environment where students thrive.

High School Administrator

Elizabeth has over 15 years of experience in education, having taught a wide range of subjects, which gives her a unique perspective in supporting students and teachers. For the past decade, she’s been proud to call Ohana home, helping students, parents, and teachers navigate new programs and discover meaningful learning opportunities.

DeeDee Cantrell

DeeDee has been in education for 15 years, working in classrooms, school offices, and at the district level. She joined Ohana when her daughter became a student and quickly discovered a passion for helping the school run smoothly. Today, DeeDee manages tuition and operations with dedication, ensuring Ohana continues to grow and thrive.

Financial Administrator

DeeDee has been part of the education field for more than 15 years, working in the classroom, front office, and at the district level in payroll. When her daughter joined Ohana as a student, DeeDee immediately felt drawn to the school’s welcoming environment and knew she wanted to be part of it. What began with managing tuition schedules has grown into a full-time role she loves—supporting Ohana’s continued growth and success. Having learned accounting alongside her mother at a young age, DeeDee brings both skill and heart to everything she does.

Tanika Spears

Tanika earned her bachelor’s in Criminal Justice and master’s in Counseling from Florida A&M University. She has served as a school counselor since 2005 and is passionate about helping students grow into happy, balanced, and successful individuals.

Director of Counseling and Student Services

Tanika is a Panama City native with a bachelor’s in Criminal Justice and a master’s in Counseling from Florida A&M University. Since 2005, she has worked as a school counselor at the elementary, middle, and high school levels, helping students grow into happy, balanced, and successful individuals. She values strong relationships between home and school and is excited to support Ohana students and families this year.

Julle Martin

Julie has over 20 years of experience in education, including five years of teaching at Ohana and five years of supporting educational partnerships with Ohana Solutions. She now focuses on school growth, outreach, community initiatives, and sharing the Ohana vision.

Instructional Technology and Marketing Specialist

Julie brings over 20 years of experience in education, including five years teaching at Ohana Institute and five years supporting educational partnerships through creative marketing and development at Ohana Solutions. She is now back at Ohana Institute, supporting school growth, outreach, community initiatives, and raising awareness of the school’s programs and offerings. Outside of work, she enjoys family time, painting, tennis, and cheering for her UGA Bulldogs.

Jonathan Mitchell

Jonathan moved from Atlanta in 2011 to help launch Ohana Institute, becoming the school’s first teacher and founding its band program. He holds a degree in Elementary Education and toured nationally with his band, Georgia. In 2015, he created Rock On The Road, taking students across the country to use music to give back to communities. Jonathan is passionate about helping students discover their voices and build confidence.

Fine Arts Lead Rock on the Road Living off the Land & Water

Jonathan is a dedicated educator and musician who moved from Atlanta in 2011 to help launch Ohana Institute, becoming the school’s first teacher and founding its band program. He holds a degree in Elementary Education from Palm Beach Atlantic University and toured nationally with his band, Georgia, after graduation. In 2015, he created Rock On The Road, taking students across the country to use music as a means of giving back to communities. Jonathan is passionate about helping students discover their voices, build confidence, and share their creativity with the world. Outside the classroom, he enjoys family, faith, golf, and outdoor adventures.

Taylor Greenwald

Taylor is a reading specialist with a master’s in education and brings her Southern roots and love of adventure to the classroom. She enjoys teaching, caring for animals, and sharing her love of learning with students.

Elements Lead Kindergarten Teacher

Born in New Orleans, Taylor has lived all over but proudly carries her southern roots wherever she goes. She earned her undergraduate degree from Loyola University and is a certified reading specialist with a master’s in education. A lifelong learner with a heart for adventure, Taylor loves sharing her passion for reading and discovery with her students. Outside the classroom, she enjoys spending time with animals—especially dogs—and can often be found pet-sitting or caring for her own furry friends.

Jennifer Kennedy

Jennifer has 24 years in education and three years at Ohana. She is passionate about creating meaningful learning experiences, fostering a love of reading, and helping students discover “light bulb” moments.

Foundations Lead 6th Grade ELA and Science

Jennifer has over 24 years of experience in education, including teaching 5th and 6th grade at Ohana Institute for the past three years. She is passionate about creating meaningful learning experiences, fostering a love of reading, and helping students celebrate those “light bulb” moments when concepts click. Jennifer earned her degree from Indiana University and brings her dedication, creativity, and heart to every classroom. Outside of teaching, she enjoys spending time with her husband and three children, being outdoors, traveling, and sharing her love of animals.

Stryder Smith

Stryder teaches World Geography, U.S. Civics, and U.S. History with a focus on practical learning and student empowerment. A U.S. Army veteran with a Master’s in Education, he enjoys family adventures, staying active, and sharing his love of the outdoors.

Middle Years Lead History and Civics, 6th Grade Social Studies

Stryder teaches World Geography, U.S. Civics, and U.S. History with a focus on practical learning and student empowerment. He earned his B.S. in Religious and Biblical Studies and M.Ed. in History from Liberty University and previously served in the U.S. Army and as a corporate leadership trainer. Outside the classroom, he enjoys family time with his wife and two daughters, staying active, reading, and cheering for his favorite sports teams.

Kylie Bucalo

Kylie has a bachelor’s in Horticultural Science and a master’s in Biology, with 12 years of lab experience at Georgia Tech and the Atlanta Botanical Garden. She is passionate about sharing her love of science and the natural world with students. This is her 10th year at Ohana, and she also serves as high school team lead, supporting students, teachers, and parents.

Julia Mead

Julia is in her third year at Ohana and has experience teaching Pre-K through 3rd grade. She is passionate about helping students grow academically and socially in a supportive environment. Outside the classroom, she enjoys family time with her husband and two daughters.

Brittany Willenborg

Brittany has taught 2nd grade at Ohana for nine years and is a certified reading specialist. She loves helping students discover the joy of reading and watching their confidence grow. Outside the classroom, she enjoys reading books, traveling, and taking long walks, and is excited to welcome her first baby this January.

2nd Grade Teacher

Brittany has taught 2nd grade at Ohana for nine years and is a reading specialist with a master’s from the University of Florida. She is passionate about helping students discover the joy of reading and building confidence. Outside the classroom, she enjoys reading books, traveling, taking long walks, and preparing to welcome her first child.

Kristen Lowell

Kristen has a bachelor’s in Psychology from Auburn University and an elementary/early childhood certification from Southern Methodist University. In her sixth year at Ohana, she is passionate about meeting each student where they are and building confidence as they learn and grow. Outside the classroom, she enjoys travel and family life with her four children.

Michael Sturdivant

Mike has 35 years of experience in education, including K–12, university, and corporate training. He supports science, technology, and innovation at Ohana while staying active outdoors and contributing to community initiatives.

STEAM K-5

Mike has 35 years of experience teaching in university, K–12, and corporate settings, and has been part of Ohana for over a decade. He is passionate about bringing science, technology, and innovative ideas into the classroom while inspiring students to explore and discover. Outside of teaching, he enjoys outdoor adventures, such as surfing, cycling, and bikerafting, and is actively involved in community initiatives.

Kate Seifried

Kate has 26 years of experience in education as a classroom teacher and literacy coach for grades K–5. She is passionate about helping every child learn in their own unique way and fostering creativity, focus, and a love of learning. Outside the classroom, she enjoys family, travel, animals, and exploring anything aquatic.

4th Grade Math, ELA, and Social Studies

Kate has 26 years of experience in education as a classroom teacher and literacy coach for grades K–5. Missy Herrington

Missy teaches 5th and 6th grade and serves as Ohana’s Technology Coordinator. She holds dual BFAs in Graphic Design and Photography from Miami University in Ohio and a master’s in Elementary Education. Lindsey is an Ohana alumna who discovered her passion for the arts with the school’s support and now gives back as a teacher. Beverly Johnson

Beverly has over 20 years of experience in education and is known for combining humor and academic rigor in the classroom. She is passionate about making learning accessible, equitable, and fun. Outside of school, she enjoys her children, grandbabies, and sharing her love of literature..

Beverly has over 20 years of experience and is known for her love of Southern Gothic literature and clever puns. She is passionate about creating a classroom where students feel supported, challenged, and inspired to find their voice. Outside the classroom, she enjoys spending time with her children and doting on her grandchildren.

Hannah Mathis

Hannah is passionate about helping students build confidence in math, develop critical thinking skills, and enjoy learning. A Walton County native and Covenant College graduate, she played collegiate volleyball and grew up surrounded by education. This is her first year teaching, and she looks forward to partnering with families to support every student’s growth.

Randy Baker

Randy has over 32 years of experience teaching math to gifted students and supporting children with special needs, including those with severe autism and schizophrenia. He is passionate about helping students grow academically and reach their full potential. This is his second year at Ohana, and he is thrilled to be part of the school community.

Elizabeth Beevers

Els studied Modern and Medieval Languages and Law in the UK and Spain. She has taught languages across all levels, sharing her passion for culture and linguistics. Els enjoys hiking, baking, and beach time, and is active in the Officer Spouse community.

Els studied Modern and Medieval Languages at the University of Cambridge and holds an MA in Law from the University of Law, London. She has taught languages from elementary to undergraduate levels and enjoys sharing her passion for culture and learning with students. Outside the classroom, she loves hiking, baking, beach days, and engaging with the Officer Spouse community at Tyndall AB.

Amber Clark

Amber brings nearly 20 years of teaching experience and a background in literature, publishing, and creative writing. She is passionate about fostering literacy and creativity and shares her home with her niece, two dogs, six cats, and a squirrel named Hopscotch.

She is passionate about literature, travel, and gaming, and inspires students to explore and enjoy learning. Cole Kaufman

Cole is passionate about writing and literature and enjoys creating meaningful, holistic learning experiences for students. He combines his creativity with a diverse background in science, history, and the arts to inspire students in the classroom. Outside of teaching, he enjoys family time, storytelling, art, and exploring new interests, including learning a bit of Korean.

High School ELA

Cole is a people person and an introvert—a perfect combination for an English teacher. A lifelong creative, Cole loves writing, storytelling, and exploring all forms of art. Their diverse experiences, from molecular biology to history, shape a holistic classroom where students connect learning to life. Outside of school, Cole enjoys foxes, speaks a little Korean, and treasures time with family and two younger brothers.

Luc Houle

Luc earned his PhD in History from the University of Florida and enjoys helping students connect the past to the present. He encourages critical thinking, creativity, and meaningful engagement with social studies.

High School U.S. and World History, Psychology

Luc holds a PhD in History from the University of Florida and is passionate about helping students connect the past to the present while developing critical thinking skills. He strives to make learning engaging and meaningful, showing students the relevance of history and social sciences. Outside the classroom, he enjoys swimming, volleyball, creativity in teaching, and sharing stories (and photos) of his dog.

Lindsey earned her undergraduate and master’s degrees from Auburn University at Montgomery and has spent the past five years teaching advanced math and coaching MathCounts and basketball. She is passionate about helping students and families thrive in a supportive learning environment. Outside the classroom, she enjoys reading, photography, graphic design, math, and coaching youth basketball.

Beth Roberts

Beth holds degrees in Business Administration and Studio Art and is in her second year teaching at Ohana. She creates a space where students can explore and grow both artistically and personally. Outside the classroom, she leads a nonprofit supporting neurodiverse individuals and enjoys life with her husband and three children who attend Ohana.

Dan Herrington

Dan oversees AP programs, service projects, student travel, and student organizations at Ohana. Formerly in the music industry and record label management, he brings real-world experience to help students think critically and become confident leaders.

Government, Personal Finance, Debate, AP Coordinator

Dan brings experience from the music industry, including co-founding Grammy-winning Dualtone Records, to his role at Ohana, where he oversees the service projects, student travel, Student Council, and National Honor Society. He is passionate about helping students think critically, apply learning to real-world challenges, and grow into confident, creative leaders. Outside the classroom, he enjoys sharing his expertise in music, business, and innovation to inspire students.

Shana Bartholomew

Shana brings operational experience and a passion for STEM to her role, teaching Aerospace Technologies, Robotics, Rocketry, and the NASA Space Program. A retired Air and Missile Defense Colonel, she applies her military expertise to inspire students in problem-solving and innovation. Shana is dedicated to guiding the next generation of engineers and thinkers at Ohana.

Aerospace, Robotics, Rocketry

Shana brings over 27 years of military and instructional experience in Air and Missile Defense to her role as Ohana’s STEAM teacher. After six years supporting Robotics and the NASA Space Program, she’s excited to guide students through Aerospace Technologies, Rocketry, and hands-on innovation. Her goal is to inspire the next generation of creators, engineers, and critical thinkers.

Jim Couch

Jim has been a professional musician since 1983 and has spent the past 15 years teaching music to students of all ages. He is passionate about helping students develop music literacy, teamwork, and confidence through hands-on practice and performance. Outside the classroom, he enjoys spending time outdoors, helping others, and finding practical ways to repair rather than discard items.

Jim has been a professional musician since 1983 and has spent the past 15 years teaching music to students of all ages. He is passionate about helping students develop music literacy, teamwork, and confidence through hands-on practice and performance. Outside the classroom, he enjoys spending time outdoors, helping others, and finding practical ways to repair rather than discard items.

Sheriff's Deputy Ryan Hooks

Deputy Ryan Hooks is in his fifth year serving as the School Resource Deputy at Ohana with the Walton County Sheriff’s Office. With 21 years in law enforcement, he values building strong relationships with students, families, and staff. School safety is his top priority, and he enjoys supporting learning through hands-on experiences with specialized Sheriff’s Office units.

Josh Fox

Josh has taught music at Ohana for four years. A lifelong drummer, he studied jazz at Eastern Illinois and Columbia University and has toured with Steel Magnolia, Buddy Guy, and John Oates. He currently performs with Sunshine Ranglers and the Cosmic Rascals.

Music Teacher and Outdoor Education

Josh Fox has been teaching music at Ohana for the past four years, and both of his daughters are proud Ohana students. His love for drums began at an early age, and he studied jazz at Eastern Illinois University and Columbia University. Josh has toured professionally with Steel Magnolia, Buddy Guy, and John Oates, and currently performs locally with Sunshine Ranglers and the Cosmic Rascals. He is passionate about helping students discover and develop their musical talents, build confidence, and express their creativity.

Michele Mathis

Michele brings 28 years of experience in education, teaching all grades from Pre-K through 12, and working in administration and teacher training. She is passionate about supporting students, parents, and teachers to create a thriving school community. Outside of work, she enjoys family life with her husband, three sons, and granddaughter.

Intervention Specialist

Michelle brings 28 years of experience in education, having taught Pre-K through 12, worked in teacher training, and served in school administration. She spent 17 years in Alabama as a teacher, administrator, and coach before joining Ohana for her second year, where she supports students, families, and staff. Michelle is passionate about helping students grow into the people they are meant to be. Outside of school, she enjoys family life with her husband Mike, their three sons, and her new daughter-in-law, Hannah.

Ryan has 25 years of teaching experience, including 14 years at Ohana, and brings energy, creativity, and fun to the classroom. He is passionate about storytelling, character development, and helping students find their voices on stage and in life. Outside of teaching, he enjoys family time, the outdoors, and cheering for the Atlanta Braves with his wife Anna and their three children.
