Food for Thought
Attention Ohana families! As you may know we are donating to a non profit organization known as Food For Thought. Food for Thought gathers donations and creates backpacks full of snacks for children who do not receive meals during the weekend. We have made teams for the Ohana Institute. The first team is 3rd grade, 4th grade, 5th grade, and 6th grade. Second team is 7th grade, 8th grade, and 9th grade boys. The last team is 9th grade girls, 10th grade, 11th grade, and 12th grade. Whichever team brings the most will be rewarded with a pizza party! Teams that do not win will prepare the bags and take inventory of all of the food we receive.
Food For Thought is an amazing organization that helps kids in need. Many kids all over the United States have help to pay for their school breakfast and lunches from the government, but what about the weekends and the summer? FFT collects donated food items to give to kids over the weekends and days when they are not able to receive food from school. People donate food, which is separated into many backpacks, which then go home with those kids. FFT helps many kids every day survive and be healthy. FFT was created by a mom who realized how many kids don’t have food when they go home; she was shocked. This organization provides backpacks for 770 students each week in 15 different schools in Walton and Okaloosa Counties. Here at Ohana we are glad to be a part of FFT and support this spectacular organization.
Throughout the year all the kids who receive free and reduced lunch and who are in need of food during weekends and breaks receive backpacks full of food from Food For Thought. Ohana is supporting this cause through a competition. On Wednesday, we will give the items to Food for Thought for their Stock the Pantry Party to kick off the school year. When you’re looking at the grocery store for things to bring, FFT suggests pop top cans, individually wrapped granola bars, crackers, cheez-its, peanut butter, jelly, bread and other healthy items that are fresh. Please check expiration dates and check out the Publix buy one get one free bins. Dont forget to turn them it on wednesday August 19th. Lets help out our community and give back.
Last year when we did Food for Thought we gathered over 10,800 items to donate. This year we were so excited to pass up last years goal, with a total of 11,300 items!!! Third place was Middle years with 1,700 items, Second place was Elements and Foundation with 3,200 items, and our winning team was High school with 6,400 items!!! Since we went well over our goal the whole school will be rewarded with a pizza party on August 28th. Thank you to everyone who participated in this amazing experience!
